Beyonce was recently refused access to a tour of the pyramid grounds in Egypt by controversial archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass according to one article in The Independent newspaper.
“Most people I take on tours are very nice and we become friends. But this lady… she said she would come at 3PM but she came late. I said ‘You have to say I’m sorry I’m late’. But she didn’t open her mouth,” Dr. Zahi said.
He also added “I brought a photographer and she also had a photographer and a guard. When my photographer started to shoot, he said ‘No, Stop! I am the one who says yes or no, not you.’ I said ‘In that case since you almost hit my photographer and you are not polite — out! I am not giving you the privilege of having you on my tour.’ I said Beyonce was stupid and I left.”
Hawass is regarded as “The Mubarak Of Antiquities” and “Egypt’s Indiana Jones” who is also a former Minister of State for Antiquities in Egypt. He lost such position in 2011 during a mass protest. Even though he’s been facing allegations of corruption from US Justice Department concerning his role as National Geographic’s Explorer-in-Residence, he remains to be the pyramid’s gatekeeper.
Aside from Beyonce, he also previously banned Joann Fletcher, a York Egyptologist who presented a BBC series on life and death in the Valley of the Kings.
Peps Final Say
Dr. Zahi Hawass seems to be creating a little reputation of rejecting high profile people from these pyramid tours. This isnt the first time that he has called up Beyonce’s name and had a similar outburst towards to the superstar. As I dont know the full complete story regarding this incident it is difficult to pass judgement but it does seem a little harsh to not allow Beyonce to tour the pyramids for being fashionably late. I suppose that Dr. Zahi Hawass was looking at it from a respect point of view and maybe Bey didn’t grant him the respect he was seeking.
